Antique Buddha Sculpture Repair

Buddha Sculpture Restoration

Antique Buddha Sculpture had been damaged in a fall, knocking the head off and shattering the skull. The sculpture was made of a black gesso-like composite, with oxblood color ground, over which the sculpture had been gilded. The gilding had long ago worn off most of the sculpture except in the recesses, and the oxblood or maroon color ground worn through to the underlying black.

The sculpture parts were glued back together, and missing elements replaced with gesso, then colored black, over which an oxblood ground was infilled, with some gilding to replicate the original patina.
