WOOD CUSTOM WINDOWS DESIGNED & FABRICATED FOR LANDMARK BUILDINGS, AND FILING FOR PERMIT WITH NYC' LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION

Olek designs and custom fabricates wood windows, using traditional joinery and balancing techniques. We fabricate, finish, and install windows to last for hundreds of years, in any design or style, from flamboyant Gothic, to Palladian fanlight, to traditional double hung, double sash weight balanced designs. Our windows' long life is attributed to mortise and tenon joinery using solid rot-resistant lumber. Only highly rot-resistant species of wood are used. We suggest storm windows as an alternative to insulated glass, for thermal efficiency, long life, and low maintenance. Where insulated glass is required by Building Code, more dependable, "warm seal" insulated glass units are specified in place of earlier aluminum seals.

CUSTOM WINDOWS IN ANY DESIGN OR PATTERN

We make windows in any appropriate wood or finish, and can match windows to match interior antique woodwork. We custom design one or hundreds of windows, and embrace unique designs and large scale windows. We fabricate in any shape; round, oval, elliptical demi-lune, rectangular, and flamboyant arched windows, with hand carved muntins.

GLAZING IN ANY TYPE OF GLASS- LEADED CAMES, PERIOD WAVY ("RESTORATION") GLASS, OR MODERN-

We can also glaze the windows with any type of glass. We have large stocks of antique wavy glass. The wavy appearance of this glass is realistic, unlike the new restoration glasses.

Olek also fabricates panels of leaded glass. We match antique textured and colored glass as well in leaded came glass panels.

Modern plate glass, annealed or tempered. We can provide the higher efficiency coated glass, such as tin oxide or other coated glasses.

WEIGHT BALANCES ARE SUPERIOR TO SPRING BALANCES-

If you would like your sashes to be as easy to open in 50 or 100 years as they are today, weight balances with chains are for you. If you prefer the savings and don't mind not being able to open them after a few years, spring balances are cheaper until you have to replace them.

WHY OTHER MANUFACTURERS ENGINEERED TO LAST 15 YEARS-

Windows were crafted before the Industrial Revolution, and up to Victorian times, to last hundreds of years. What happened, why do they last 5-15 years now? Windows are "engineered" by manufacturers and corrupted specifications adopted by trade associations to increase profitability. Manufacturers seized a golden opportunity when insulated window glass units were invented several decades ago. They were hailed by the window industry as great innovations by providing energy savings. The Building Codes accepted them, the industry trade associations accaimed them. But the dirty secret behind the short and brutal lives of windows today is that the entire window is designed to last no longer than the insulated glass, only 5-15 years. So the thermal efficiency is short-lived, and in fact not as energy efficient when new as storm windows anyway.

Shameful innovations included:

  • •  The use of spring balances instead of weight balances-

The modest 18th century pulley shames the 20th century spring balance for superior durability and ease of use.

  • •  Finger-jointed lumber, falls apart.

  • •  Clad frames, with vinyl over terrible non-rot resistant waste wood.

  • •  Elimination of true divided lights, with the insertion of plastic moldings over the glass.

  • •  The use of non-rot resistant wood, such as pine. Pine used to be rot resistant, before global warming started 150 years ago- no more. Cheap [African] mahogany is another expensive sounding wood, but is entirely inappropriate for use outdoors.

American culture fosters the use of throw-away windows, the antithesis of "green" building. Our woodwork standards and Building Codes embrace cheap windows. The technology has been developed centuries ago, for windows to last for hundreds of years. Following traditional joinery and craft rules Olek manufacture durable and trouble free green windows.
